Loom Light - a dynamic interactive monument in time
Impressive interactive light monument for the heroes of resistance created by media and public space artist Titia Ex. The monument is a tribute to Jan Zwartendijk* and many other invisible heroes of resistance from the region during the Second World War. The work marks 75 years of living in freedom.
Analogous to Jan Zwartendijk's approach Ex knows how to make the utmost of the potential in her light sculpture Loom Light. She emphatically opts for a dynamic monument that refers to this history and that also moves with our time. The flowing energy of the monument comes and goes in and out of the earth in a V-shape. The sacrifice of countless people, the deep black period that preceded our freedom. Titia Ex: “The work changes shape and moves with you. During the day, the monument reflects the sunlight. In the evening, a feast of lights is created referring to the Hanukkiah, in which the light is lit by an invisible hand for eight days. It is a tribute to Jan Zwartendijk and the countless invisibles who have engaged to save lives.” Up close you will discover the layered, irregularly bulging skin of the sculpture. As if numerous layers of glass are stacked organically on top of each other to gradually reach for the heavenly vault. You experience the energy of constantly changing lights, both in tone and saturation. The work is interactive and responds to the approaching visitor. She invites the viewer to experience the many meanings she has put into it. The artist transforms this conscious action into a dynamic light motif. With this, Ex indicates how important the acting role (even small) of each individual is, in giving direction to the future.
Kind of light creation : Light is dynamic and connected to vital feelings; light is both communication and energy. The lighting design goes through a parametric model that generates lighting behaviour. This creates a light image that lives by dynamically adapting to its surroundings. Loom Light means misty light, the haze that you still experience for example when the light beam of the lighthouse shines in the opposite direction. It is not clear. The basic light is the Loom light, a misty white atmosphere. By approaching the work, it becomes more active and an acceleration takes place. By actually walking through the work, a random colour rotates through the work in a spiral form. The visitor adds his or her own energy.
Urban situation : The light sculpture, with a diameter of approximately 3.50 meters, extends from 4.50 meters to almost 6 meters high., is located on the city's old energy site, the NRE, in an accessible and open area. It is located at an important traffic junction, for both cars and cyclists and pedestrians. More than 15,000 cyclists (before Covid-19) cross the city here from north to south. The work stands alone. You don't just walk by; you have to make an effort to initiate the exchange of energy. The opening is postponed till September 18, 2021, Liberation Day of the Eindhoven in 1944.
