Movable LED panels create a flexible auditorium

A state-of-the-art auditorium in the centre of Swiss Re’s new campus in Zurich offers an ideal framework for various events, whereby the media architecture in particular sets new standards: Ten room-high LED panels can be positioned in different configurations. Arranged individually or in seamless blocks, they change the room as architectural elements and serve as flexibly usable image carriers. The LEDs are positioned in such a tight grid and their brightness is so precisely adapted to that of the room that from a certain distance the panels are not recognizable as light-emitting image carriers. Materiality and digital information of the highest quality mesh perfectly.

A state-of-the-art auditorium in the centre of Swiss Re’s new campus in Zurich offers an ideal framework for various events, whereby the media architecture in particular sets new standards: Ten room-high LED panels can be positioned in different configurations. Arranged individually or in seamless blocks, they change the room as architectural elements and serve as flexibly usable image carriers. The LED panels can be placed at twenty-three positions in the auditorium. Since each LED forms one pixel, it is possible to seamlessly connect several panels. For conventions and lectures, they are grouped together to form a panorama wall. This enables large-scale multimedia presentations in outstanding quality. For workshops and conferences, the orientation is shifted towards the front of the auditorium and the panels are split: In addition to a central block of six panels, two smaller blocks of two panels each are placed on the long sides. For receptions, the panels are spread around the walls as individual elements. In combination with variable lighting settings the LED panels immerse the room in a festive atmosphere. The LEDs are positioned in such a tight grid and their brightness is so precisely adapted to that of the room that from a certain distance the panels are not recognizable as light-emitting image carriers. This effect is enhanced by the work of artist Helmut Federle: his painting on the surrounding wooden walls has been applied to the panels. At the same time, however, they can also show moving images that extend from the floor to the ceiling. Materiality and digital information of the highest quality mesh perfectly. The LED panels and their suspension, which allows the panels to move flexibly, was custom developed. The entire ensemble of rooms is characterized by highest quality flexibility. It is thus exemplary for high-end contemporary media architecture.

Facade type and geometry (structure) : Auditorium media architecture: Each of the ten movable LED panels is 5.63 metres high and 0.96 metres wide. The auditorium has a room height of 5.8 metres, is 21 metres long and 11 metres wide.

Kind of light creation : We used LED display panels. Since each LED in the panel forms one pixel, it is possible to seamlessly connect several panels to a larger LED wall that has an extremely high resolution, contrast and luminous intensity.

Resolution and transmitting behaviour : Each panel has a resolution of 640 x 336 pixels, together they have a resolution of 6400 x 3360 pixels.

Pixel distance : The pixel distance is 1.5 mm.

Urban situation : The auditorium is located in the centre of Swiss Re’s new campus on Mythenquai in Zurich, Switzerland. It is used for internal Swiss Re events and can be rented for external (semi-public) events.

Description of showreel : The showreel is adapted to the requirements of the events.
