A glowing tribute to the diversity of nature
Plant a Light is, literally, a glowing tribute to nature's diversity and the basic principles of life, illustrating how life is constantly unfolding and evolving in nature: Birth and death, growth, change and transformation. By touching a glooming pillar installed in the park, visitors could create a charge that was transferred to the dome through sound and an impulse planting an organism of light. More than 15.000 lights were planted during the installation period from the 1st of November to the 9th of December, 2017.
From November 1st, the Tropical Dome of Aarhus Botanical Garden's Greenhouses was transformed into the installation Plant a Light; a glowing tribute to the diversity of nature. It represented the constant change of life in nature: Birth and death, growth, changes, metamorphoses. The interactive installation was controlled from the Botanical Garden, outside of the Dome. Using a glowing pillar, citizens and visitors were able to plant a light, watch it grow and eventually light up every cell of the Tropical Dome. The interaction pillar controlling Plant a Light was situated on the lawn between the Greenhouses and the old mill. It was active from 5PM – 10PM every day from November 1st until December 9th. The last night marked the official end of the Capital of Culture year. The installation was developed and produced by CAVI, TEKNE, CIBIS, Communication and Culture, AU, in collaboration with the Greenhouses, Science and Technology, AU, and the design agency Kollision, as part of the strategic collaboration TEKNE, between CAVI and European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017. Descriptions
Facade type and geometry (structure) : Unique dome shaped steel structure, with inflated plastic cells as windows.
Kind of light creation : Using every cell/window as a single pixel plus using the sub pixel level of 200 pixels per cell (average).
Pixel distance : 1cm following the lines of the structure, 1-2,5 m between the lines of the structure.
Urban situation : Placed in the city of Aarhus botanical garden (a park in center of town), passed by thousands everyday. Next to attraction: The Old Town.
